Tampopo

In Japanese on September 28, 2010 at 11:35 pm

The first time I dined at Tampopo was way back in December of 2007 when they first opened shop in the then quiet basement of Liang Court. The food was earnestly Japanese and Tampopo had a somewhat nice not overly commercialized vibe to it. Its been three years since and Tampopo has definitely developed its own home base, setting up an additional shop downtown in Ngee Ann City to meet the demands for everything Japanese. It so happened that I was one of those people last Friday, walking about town and happy to have Tampopo within reach so as to satisfy my Japanese ramen itch!

Zam Zams

In Local on September 25, 2010 at 10:50 am

I used to think that pratas and briyanis tasted pretty much the same one store to the next and hence never really was crazy over that kind of food. Of course, I do have my moments where I do crave a crispy indian flat bread with some lemak curry but so far it’s been really once in a rare blue moon. That is until I was introduced to the world of the prata and murtabuk according to Zam Zams!

Yakitori

In OneSixB on September 22, 2010 at 10:17 pm

The Malays call it ‘satay’, the Indians call it ‘kebab’, the Japanese coin it ‘yakitori’…whichever way you call it, they all refer to the grilling of meats over a charcoal fire. I always imagined that putting together this skewered dish was quite a painstaking effort, what with the marinating, the skewering, the setting up of the charcoal fire to the actual grilling, and hence never thought to expect to have it actually whipped up at home. Pak Law obviously didn’t quite agree with my interpretation as he announced one Saturday morning quite out of the blue, that dinner that evening would be yakitori.  I have to admit that I was pleased as I do love these skewered treats but was a little worried at the same time as I wasn’t sure if Pak Law could manage all that prep and the cooking!

Homemade mooncakes

In Desserts, Make on September 19, 2010 at 3:37 pm

It was after dinner and over some snowskin champagne truffle mooncakes last year when Auntie T suggested having a go at making our very own mooncakes. We were all excited and made arrangements the weekend before the festival to get messy in the kitchen but were unable to get hold of all the ingredients as everything everywhere was literally sold out! So the plan was postponed to this year and over the last couple of weekends, we messed around with flour, dough and moulds, and really had quite a blast!

Mooncakes!

In Local on September 16, 2010 at 10:37 pm

In less than a week’s time, it will officially be the fifteenth day of the eight month, marking the start of the Mid-Autumn Festival. This is one Chinese Festival that I actually look forward to purely because it is the only time of the year where I can get my hands on some truly delicate and lovely mooncakes.  My fascination with the festival kind of developed only recently and while I would love to say that it was inspired by the legend of Chang’e, it was really sparked by the discovery of one very exquisite creation – the snowskin mooncake.

Egg3 cafe

In Cafes on September 12, 2010 at 6:23 pm

Mention the name Egg3 and the words hip fashion and indie furniture immediately come to mind. It all started back in 2004, when a group of 3 friends put together the concept store and set up the first Egg3 store at Erskine road. The store was an instant hit as it piqued Singaporean’s curiosity for things that are truly one of a  kind. They have since developed a good footprint here with stores at the Cathay and Mandarin Gallery, and as of two or so months ago, extended its operations into the food and drink business with the setting up of its very own Egg3 cafe at the new old Haig Boys’ School. Having a true soft spot for cafes and old spaces given a new lease of life, I knew I had to visit the moment I read about the new addition in the papers some time back.

Penang hawker fare

In Local on September 11, 2010 at 1:32 pm

The last time I was in Penang was probably when I was six…okay make that seven. It has been so long that the only recollection I have about Penang is the car ferry (which I believe has now been replaced by a bridge!) and the famous Gurney drive kway teow tng. Fast forward to present day and I think the reason why I have yet to return to Penang for a visit is because I figured why the need to travel when Penang literally comes to me three times a year, thanks to the Penang hawker fare! Frozen crème caramel

In Frozen Obsessions on September 6, 2010 at 8:37 pm

I try to mess about in the kitchen once in a while and have over time, come to discover that while my steak and pasta skills are really quite amateurish, I am actually not too bad when it comes to whipping up some homemade ice cream. To be really honest, ice cream making isn’t really that difficult but I would like to think that being an ice cream lover myself, being able to create some kick-ass pints and put a smile on someone’s face is enough for me to beam with some pride and be called a blooming ice cream aficionado! I have developed a mini repertoire so far and am happy to share with all one of my recent flavor favorites.

So here goes…introducing the frozen creme c!

B&J chunkfest!

In Frozen Obsessions on September 4, 2010 at 11:41 pm

Ben & Jerry’s is probably almost solely responsible for my obsession with all things frozen. I used to literally live off pints back in my uni days and yes, my freezer was (and still is!) always stocked with B&J’s pint sized wonders. So you can imagine my excitement when I first spotted the colorful decal publicizing this year’s chunkfest at the cold section of the gas station. I immediately whipped up my iPhone and made a reminder to self to be at the chunkfest this year no matter what!

Salted egg yolk custard buns

In Dim Sum on September 3, 2010 at 11:43 pm

If you have not yet heard of the salted egg yolk custard bun, I am proud and glad to be the one to open your gastronomic eyes to this fabulous dim sum dessert. It is apparently quite a well known Cantonese dessert that people enjoy after a  meal of dim sum, but I for one was only initiated to this age old dish a couple months back.  I actually did spot it on the menu during ordering but the words salted egg and custard were enough for me to immediately conclude that it wasn’t quite my  kind of thing. Thankfully, the big boss of Roland’s Restaurant insisted that we try the creation and I have to say just having one bite into this exquisite buns, had me totally sold!
